Conroy Visitor James McBride

Ohrstrom Library joins St. Paul’s School in welcoming writer and musician James McBride as this school year’s first Conroy Visitor.  Mr. McBride will be speaking Tuesday in Memorial Hall from 11:00 AM to 12:00PM about his book The Color of Water.  Students, Faculty and Staff have all had the opportunity to read this fascinating memoir of McBride’s childhood, and the story of how he discovered the complex history of his mother’s life.  Here is a quote from James McBride’s website about the book:

“He slept on mattresses, played in blues bands, taught ESL to Polish refugees, and played weddings on Long Island. While struggling through self-described “unsettled angst” he came to realize that the key to his search lay behind the story of the most interesting person he’d ever known in his life — and the person he loved the most — his own mother.”

Take some time to get to know a little bit about McBride before his visit by touring his flashtastic website:  www.jamesmcbride.com.  You can see a film clip from Spike Lee’s movie Miracle at St. Anna based on McBride’s book (he also wrote the screenplay), read a short bio, and listen to clips from his new music CD The Process.
