Trickster Lit

While St. Paul’s students were away from campus over the summer, another iconic animal appeared on campus, joining the ranks of Hank–the oft’ sighted heron who loves the rushing waters near Friedman, Luca Bassi–loyal Clark House caregiver, Paulie–the Ohrstrom Library pelican with an excellent fashion sense, Cleaver the Beaver–feller of Hockey Rink trees, and many other famous furred and feathered SPS community members (both real and inanimate).

Meet Te (pronounced TAY), the Library Pond coyote! While a steadfast figure on campus throughout the summer, the Facilities Department shared that this rascal is more elusive come fall, so you may not have seen him around. Mrs. Kittler was glad to see him go, as this wily con artist has given her quite a fright on more than one occasion. However, the rest of the Library team was sad to say goodbye to this fluffy-tailed flimflammer and thought we should recognize Te.

Tricksters have featured in storytelling traditions throughout world history–Anansi, Coyote, Eshu, Fox, “The Good People,” Loki, Maui, Raven, Sun Wukong, and many more. As a special send-off for Te’s seasonal hibernation, here is a list of reads about mischievous and canny creatures of myth whose rebelliousness and cunning spin quite clever tales.
