Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day, observed on February 2nd each year, has its roots in Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. If a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow, it means six more weeks of winter; if it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early. Celebrations occur in many locations, but the most famous takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where their resident groundhog Punxsutawney Phil helps forecast the end of winter each year.

The 1993 movie Groundhog Day brought more attention to this small holiday tradition, as well as made popular the “time loop” theme in which a character relives a period of time again and again, usually (but not always!) leading to comic moments, self-discovery, and happy endings.
