ArtStor Update: Login to Save images

Earlier in the school year ArtStor made a minor change: Users wishing to save pictures from the ArtStor database must now log in to their user account. Thankfully, creating an account and logging in to it is very easy. There is a prompt in the upper right-hand corner of the ArtStor main page, immediately visible after a user enters the digital art library:

Registering must be done from an SPS networked computer. Following this, users may then access their ArtStor account from off the grounds.

The Library in Your Lap

This phrase, coined by current senior, RG ’12, is such a great way of expressing the always available digital content purchased/subscribed to by Ohrstrom library.

When you are off the SPS grounds, such as during the upcoming Winter Break, simply visit vpn.sps.edu and log in with your SPS credentials. All of the library’s digital holdings will now become available, including:

From the Archives: eBooks on OLDA

For those of you with an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad with iBooks installed, you have the option to download specially designed eBooks based on OLDA online exhibits. These eBooks are formatted and designed to be viewed using the iBooks reader, available free through the Apple App Store, but can also be read using any eBook reader that is compatible with the ePub file format.

OLDA eBooks are available for the following exhibits:

Access the links above while on your iBooks activated device and click the “Open in iBooks” button that appears. This will automatically load your eBook onto your iBook bookshelf. You will then be able to access your OLDA eBook any time and anywhere you go, allowing you to read about the history of St. Paul’s School in these brief presentations, richly illustrated with photographs from the St. Paul’s School archives collection.

Accessing eBooks at Ohrstrom

Ohrstrom Library provides access to an ever-growing collection of eBooks. The library currently has 86,000+ eBooks available, all with unlimited simultaneous user access.

There are two methods of locating eBooks: using the online catalog or by visiting any of the library’s individual eBook collections available on the library’s eBook page.

Library eBook collections are viewable on most versions of the following: PCs, tablets and hand-held devices.

New Research Guide: Artificial Intelligence

A new Artificial Intelligence research guide is available for those working on the Artificial Intelligence research project. Use this guide to identify useful eReference sources, recommended library catalog searches, newspaper, magazine and journal articles, as well as online sources.

ebrary offers open access to 9/11 ebooks through September

Throughout the month of September, ebrary, an eBook vendor that Ohrstrom Library currently contracts with, is offering free access to its collection related to 9/11. Fifteen searchable, full-text ebooks are available as part of this collection.

In support of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, ebrary is offering open access to a collection of relevant e-books through September. We hope that this collection provides a valuable resource to anyone seeking to learn or understand more about this tragic event, or reflect on its world impact.

eBook Collection Highlight: Study Guides & College Admissions

Read Ohrstrom’s eBook collections while away for the summer! Simply visit vpn.sps.edu & log in using your SPS user name and password.

Next, click on the library link and search the library catalog.

To retrieve only eBooks, use the advanced search feature to limit by item type ‘eBook.’

Preparing for college admission? Consider a subject search for “Universities and Colleges, Admission.”

Studying for entrance exams? Consider a subject search for “SAT, Study Guides.”

All of Ohrstrom’s eBooks can be read on a personal computer. No special e-reader is required. Happy e-reading!

Curious About Kindles?

Come on down to Ohrstrom Library to check out our Kindle 2. Click HERE to access the online catalog entry, and then click on the “Catalog Record” link to see a complete list of current titles available on the Kindle.

If it is already checked out, log onto My Account and place a hold on it.

If you are interested in the Kindle and would like to recommend that a specific title be added to its contents, you can place an online acquisitions request by clicking HERE and select Other for Item Type and specify that it is for the Kindle. If approved, the title will be added to our Kindle.

The Kindle can be checked out for one week and renewed if there are no holds on it. See the Circulation Desk for more detailed information and policies.

eBooks @ Ohrstrom

Ohrstrom Library is pleased to announce our inaugural collection of eBooks.

To utilize these digital texts, please visit the Library’s website: library.sps.edu

Using the eBooks link, pictured above, one may then exclusively search the eBook collection. The eBooks have also been integrated into the Library catalog and are searchable and accessible alongside the print collection.

This eBook collection is from the American Council of Learned Societies and contains 2,800 scholarly texts with a focus on the Humanities including the following areas: History, Art, Religion, Folklore, Musicology, Literature and Science history.

As you try this new eBook collection the library encourages you to share your experience with us. Your feedback would be particularly helpful as the Library is investigating and evaluating additional eBook packages.

New Archives Online Exhibit: Places of Invention

A new online exhibit, called Places of Invention: Science and Mathematics at St. Paul’s School, is now part of the Ohrstrom Library website. This online exhibit is based on a more in-depth Archives photograph exhibit now on display in the upper level of Ohrstrom Library. Here is an excerpt from the introduction to the online exhibit:

With construction of the Lindsay Center for Mathematics and Science now well underway, it is fitting that the St. Paul’s School community reflects back upon the places that have served the study of science and mathematics so well throughout the School’s history.

Photos from the Archives were scanned specifically for the online exhibit including this image of a Biology classroom in the Westinghouse Lab:

The online exhibit features images ranging from the first science lab built on the St. Paul’s School grounds in 1889 to the architectural renderings of the Lindsay Center for Mathematics and Science, now under construction. The main gallery of thumbnail images includes links to individual pages that feature larger images and brief descriptions. There is also a slideshow of the images that can be initiated from any of the pages in the exhibit.

Take a few moments to browse through the gallery of images and follow the development of the places that have helped to facilitate the high standard of education in mathematics and science that has been a part of the St. Paul’s School vision from its very beginning.
