{"id":3176,"date":"2011-11-19T02:16:51","date_gmt":"2011-11-19T07:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ohrstromblog.com\/spsarchives\/?p=3176"},"modified":"2015-04-06T15:12:40","modified_gmt":"2015-04-06T20:12:40","slug":"archie-mccrea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ohrstromblog.com\/spsarchives\/archives\/3176","title":{"rendered":"Archie McCrea"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"epub-chapter-57\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>The boy in this photograph is identified as \u201cArchie McCrea\u201d and is Archibald Montgomery McCrea, Form of 1894.\u00a0 The New Chapel is behind him, and on the left of the photograph is the Big Study.<\/p>\n<p>Archie McCrea was a Delphian, and during the 1890-91 school year played on the club\u2019s third football eleven team.\u00a0 By the Fall of 1892 he had worked his way up to the Delphian first eleven as a rusher, and went on to Yale to play football.\u00a0 He was from Pittsburgh, PA, and his father was the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He went on to become the president of the Union Spring and Manufacturing Company of New York and Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>In 1911, McCrea made the newspapers when his wife, Mary Corling Johnston Dunlop, sacrificed her two million dollar inheritance from her previous marriage \u2013 a sum in excess of forty six million of today\u2019s dollars &#8211; in order to marry him. \u00a0 An article in the\u00a0<em>Pittsburgh Press<\/em>\u00a0of October 22, 1911 states:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"epub-chapter-57\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIn love as she really was, and young Mr. McCrea kept begging her to name the day.
