A new Renaissance Artist Research Guide has been created for the current Fifth Form Humanities project. Consider using this guide to identify helpful reference materials, catalog searches, art images and journal articles. A permanent link to the guide can be found in the sidebar menu under Research > Research Guides > Renaissance Art.

The library is now using a research guide format called LibGuides. The LibGuides software presents a customizable, instantly up-datable, tabbed, clean interface. Soon, all of the library research guides will be formatted in this manner. We like it and hope you do too! Please send your comments/thoughts on LibGuides to: lsanborn at sps dot edu.

Three new research guides are now available through the Ohrstrom blog – just in time to help with current research projects.

Ms. Sanborn has put together research guides for Middle Eastern Voices, the Humanities V Renaissance Artists research project, and the Latin I class. The research guides contain helpful lists of Reference books, catalog search topics for finding circulating books, citation examples, and database search tips.

You can access the research guides through the links in the Ohrstrom Blog sidebar to the left of this post (see image above) or through the main menu of the Ohrstrom Library website (ie., Research > Research Guides > Latin I). Each research guide has a link to a PDF version of the guide for printing or downloading to your computer.

The newest addition to Ohrstrom’s art reference collection features a chronology of Renaissance art, an introduction & overview of the period, and hundreds of brief entries featuring painters, sculptors, architects and patrons. Other topics include: themes, specific artwork and technical terms. Alphabetically arranged, the entries are short, sweet & direct.

HELPFUL FOR: Humanities V – especially scholars looking for just a bite of information. Particularly useful when looking to decide which artist or artwork to research.

In Hum. V? Looking for inspiration for your Renaissance art research project? Deciding which artist/painting combination to write about? Try ARTstor!

What is it? – ARTstor is an image database containing nearly one million images. (We have other databases, such as Oxford Art Online, ProQuest & JSTOR, to help with artists biographical information & art analysis.)

How do I use it? – Visit the library web site & select ARTstor from the list of databases. You can search by keyword, such as artist’s name or title of work.

Now, browse the results for inspiration:

Too much? Overwhelmed? For a smaller selection of images, try the advanced search mode and add another keyword:

(Select “Advanced Search” from the pull-down menu to bring up the window shown below.)

(You’ve gone from 171 entries to 8 by adding one additional keyword.)

Once you’ve found your inspiration, consider using these other library online databases for biographical and analytical information: Oxford Art Online, ProQuest, and JSTOR.
