Happy Birthday to The Pelican!

The first issue of The Pelican was published on September 19, 1945. The goal was to produce a student-run newspaper that would be, in the words of the first editor-in-chief, “the visible expression of your thoughts and ideas”. He continued:

“With this issue we are undertaking a venture which is new, so far as we know, in the history of Saint Paul’s. It has not been without great deliberation that this newspaper has been founded, for we realize the difficulty of the work it entails. It has been our feeling, however, that a paper of the sort we are about to launch will be both a help and a source of interest to the School.”

Big headlines and opinion pieces, school events and sports coverage, and profiles on the students, faculty, and staff that make up the Millville community – all of this and more documents the daily life of St. Paul’s School through the years.

For now, let’s wish The Pelican a Happy 80th birthday! Then visit the library during the winter term to check out our next archives exhibit, Still Flying: 80 Years of The Pelican.
