Taking Flight

Taylor Jenkins Reid is a popular author here at Ohrstrom. Her new book, Atmosphere, tells the story of Joan Goodwin, one of the first women in NASA’s space program. When she is accepted to be an astronaut-in-training, she feels like her dreams have come true. Beyond the challenges of preparing for space, she also finds friendship and love – so much more than she expected and hers if she has the courage to reach for it. While Joan is fictional, Reid gives the reader a glimpse into the world of NASA in the 1980’s and the trailblazing women -starting with Sally Ride – who made history.

What is the appeal about flight? Amelia Earhart said, “”The lure of flying is the lure of beauty. The dramas of the clouds, the glory of the stars, the charm of landscapes and the wonders of the waters and skies have, to me, an irresistible appeal.” Here are some books that attempt to capture that spirit for those of us who will never sit in a cockpit or venture into space.
