February is Black History Month and SPS has been celebrating all month long. From the Crumpacker Gallery exhibit to a visit from the Step Afrika! Dance Troupe to the 5th Annual Black History Month Celebration hosted by Onyx Affinity Group – there is something for everyone to enjoy.
But what are some other ways to celebrate? Here are just a few ideas!
Learn about Black history and the Black leaders who have shaped that history by exploring your local community and visiting Black or African-American history museums. For example, you can visit the Black Heritage Trail NH in Portsmouth to learn about Black history here in the Granite State.
Watch films and documentaries created by Black filmmakers to discover stories that celebrate the rich experiences, cultures, and histories of the Black community.
Read books or stories written by Black authors to enjoy unique perspectives and rich narratives reflecting diverse experiences and cultural histories. To help get you started, we have put together a list of graphic novels written by Black authors. Check one out today!
Lastly, commit to beyond February. Make a commitment to Black History Month, but don’t limit your efforts to just February. At Ohrstrom Library, our shelves are full of books celebrating Black Americans’ contributions to culture, history, science, and the arts, which you can find not just in February, but all year long!
