Can you believe it? We are celebrating Ohrstrom Library’s 35th birthday this week!
The idea for Ohrstrom began in the mid-1980’s, when it became clear that Sheldon Library could no longer support the growing student body. Building Ohrstrom became a symbol for a new era in academic life. Groundbreaking began in 1988. Construction took several years, with the cornerstone finally installed on October 20, 1990. The work of moving the library’s books from Sheldon to Ohrstrom was more than a logistical operation; it was a community event that embodied the spirit of the school. On November 16, 1990, and again on January 4, 1991, students formed a human brigade, stretching from Sheldon to Ohrstrom. For hours, they passed books hand-to-hand across campus, transferring the essence of the library – its books, knowledge, and history – to its new home. Ohrstrom Library officially opened for business on January 14, 1991, and was dedicated a few months later at a large celebration that took place over the weekend of April 20-21, 1991.

Have you ever noticed the clever way that Ohrstrom Library blends into the landscape of Millville? Its design features architectural references to historic buildings around the grounds including the New Chapel, Schoolhouse, and the Central Heating Plant. Check it out next time you visit!
